Helicopter To The Glaciers
November 30, 2011 | Leave a Comment
Today, we put together an adventure on the spot. We took helicopters to the glaciers. The pilots used two R22 Robinson helicopters to lift 6 passengers to the tops of the mountains in three flights, leaving each round of passengers on the mountain tops to photograph for 45 minutes before the next flight came in.
Seth Resnick, Eric Meola, Arthur Meyerson, David DuChemin, and I led the expedition.
We went in search of the Alvear Glacier and ice cave Seth and I hiked to in 2009. As it was earlier in the season this year, the snow cover hid the blue cave and lagoon below the glacier, which seemed to have receded substantially, so instead we landed at another set of nearby lakes.
We were all exhilarated by the adventure! David seemed truly grateful to be as mobile as he was, after his accident earlier this year.
The stress of the flight was too much for Arthur, so he passed out – or at least he pretended to.
Tomorrow evening we sail down the Beagle Channel and into the Drake Passage.

Biannual Wine Purchase At The End Of The World
November 29, 2011 | Leave a Comment
Seth Resnick loves wine. When he and I formed Digital Photo Destinations, I knew there’d be a significant budget allocated for wine and thus I’d learn a lot more about it. I’ve learned everything I know about wine from Seth Resnick, Greg Gorman, and George Jardine, and through their appreciation of it gained a much greater appreciation for it myself.
When we arrived at Quelhue wine shop in Ushuaia for the fourth time, a big smile came across the manager / vintner Mercedes’ face. Our other visits were notable for their excess. During this visit, she pulled out a sheet of photographs of our previous visits.
Seth found many of the region’s well-known Malbecs and even more amazing Tempranillos, as well as a good reserve section of wines from the region. I like my wine like I like my people, full of character. I bought some relatively inexpensive varietals – Carmenere, Tannat, Caladoc, Bonarda, etc. Plus, my favorite scotch, Caol Isla.
Amazing adventures with fabulous friends always go better with fine spirits.
