Despite the incredible advances of color management, proofing is not obsolete. You still need to proof to ... confirm color management practices and compensate for minor imperfections; determine ideal ink limits and print speeds, compensate for viewing light temperature; fine-tune the appearance of an image; experience the aesthetic effects of substrate; evaluate the impacts of scale; and assess fine detail, edge quality, noise, and banding. In other words, the proof is in the proof. If you’re not proofing you can achieve better print quality. If you are proofing, a systematic approach to proofing will increase efficiency and quality.
- Make quick and easy notes for precise recall of printing conditions
- Survey the aesthetic impact of substrate
- Compensate for overinking
- Reduce banding and noise
- Refine sharpness and edge for specific media and sizes
