This is a fascinating talk. It makes great sense in many industries, but alas, the arts fight against brand extension. Photographers, painters, musicians, architects, are all told to develop a unique style or voice and focus on it.
How would the art world view JPCs work if he devoted a year to doing architectural photography in black and white? Remember the response to Bob Dylan when he went electric rock?
Dylan survived, nicely, and I suppose JPC would too because both are established entities. But lesser known artists might not have much luck in diversifying their brands.
This, of course, is one of the hardest parts of being an artist. Developing a brand, and fighting the creative instinct to experiment with new styles.
Sigh….
